Tom's grandparents, Robert and Hazel Godfrey, were vegetable farmers in Mt. Laurel, New Jersey. They had eight children, who all grew up working on the farm. At night, after farming all day, Robert and Hazel would haul their vegetables to the market. Although it was tempting to sleep on the journey—after all, the horses knew the way—Hazel always remained awake to watch for trains. The other thing the children remember about those days—while the boys were admitted avid baseball players, they were not allowed to play until all the farm work was done.
Tom’s parents, George and Mary Godfrey, moved to the eastern shore of Maryland in 1952. They came with George’s brother Harley and grew 50 acres of asparagus. By the late 60’s, George and Mary were harvesting over 150 acres.
When Tom was 12, he and his 3 siblings grew and sold cantaloupes; he made $94 that year. The next year the 2 oldest opted out, so Tom and sister Sarah kept the business going for the next several years. Then he moved to the farm we are on now and started working by himself.
At Godfrey's Farm today, we grow about 250 acres of fresh market fruits and vegetables, sold mostly on site to other farm markets and grocery stores. But we truly enjoy the hundreds of families that come to see the farm and to pick your own strawberries, blueberries, cherries, and peaches. We hope you'll invite your friends to come see us too. The farm also sells bedding plants and live herbs for home and personal cooking.
School tours are conducted in the spring for children in pre-kindergarten through the second grade, and each child picks his or her own pint of fresh juicy red strawberries as part of this educational outing.
In 2010, we were named a "featured farmer" in the new cookbook, Dishing Up Maryland.
We hope you'll come see us soon!
